The Horse of the Year range was launched in 1989 as a cheaper, more durable alternative the the Julip Originals. The early HOTYs, as the range is commonly abbreviated to, were made of a bendy rubber with wire in their legs. The Arab Champions made in this way then were made in a shiny plastic, before the current matte plastic was used. This range is more aimed at children, and the horses tend to be sold in gift-sets, often with a rider and tack.
I have managed to collect nearly all of the HOTY range, I am just missing the bay Family Pony and the chestnut rubber Arab Champion with the chestnut hair.
